This new technology has renew the concept of Three-Phase shunt regulator. For many years these devices have been using Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR) to switch to ground all the excessive energy coming from the generator in order to keep the battery voltage constant. This has been widely accepted and proved to work fine for small and medium size generators in combustion engines. However, the new regulator technology based on MOSFET transistors is getting very popular because of its better performance as well as many other interesting advantages over the SCR.
Nowadays energy demand in modern bikes and ATV is becoming higher and higher because of the additional electronics modules such as fuel injection system, high efficiency lighting, multiple accessories, etc. This implies a great amount of energy coming from the generator, and the SCR shunt regulator is unable to meet this demand. The main reason is because of its low energy efficiency, the internal losses of the regulator results in overheating and early damage when driving currents greater than 35A. As a result, SCR technology has reached a limit, and is not recommended for major vehicles with great energy consumption.
In order to solve the problem mentioned before, it was necessary to reduce the losses in the switching device. When the SCR is active (shunting generator?s current to ground), it has a high forward voltage drop (about 1.5 V @ 35A), because it works like a power diode. As the current rises, the dissipated power (i.e. heat) grows lineally.
Unlike the latter, MOSFET transistors may be modeled as a voltage controlled switch, with a complete different semiconductor architecture to makes them more efficient at handling energy. When active, they behave like a high power& very low value resistor that shunts all the generator?s excessive current to ground. Therefore, the forward voltage drop is very low (less than 0.2 V @ 35A) and the dissipated power is dramatically reduced. This is directly related to less heating of the device and extended lifetime of the regulator.
MOSFET technology has been continuously improved during the last years, because its wide application in consumer and industrial electronics. Semiconductor integration techniques now offer higher power handling in reduced spaces with excellent efficiency. Moreover, they allow faster switching, higher reliability and great control in heavy duty conditions.
The RECTIFIER DIODES performance is another important factor when it comes to power dissipation. As all the output current flows through them, they must offer great ruggedness and stability, as well as power handling efficiency. Our MOSFET regulators use high current enhanced rectifier diodes with extremely low voltage drop, contributing to avoid overheating by meeting the requirements detailed before.
The internal CONTROLLER has been completely redesigned to meet MOSFET transistor driving requirements. The battery voltage is continuously monitored to adjust the output current at different power consumption situations. The new electronic control avoids the use of ignition sense line, reducing the number of connections and wiring topology. It also incorporates a low power Stand-By mode which enables insignificant current drain from the battery when the vehicle is not running.
As a conclusion, this new technology allows the shunt regulators to increase the output driving current up to 50A, with excellent voltage regulation. Extra benefits such as reduced heating, high efficiency and advanced electronic control makes this new regulator the best choice to manage the charging system of your vehicle.
